This soundtrack is soooo good and cohesive, with the same motif returning all over the place.
The Main Theme really stands out in the crowded space of similar games, embodying the childlike wonder you feel when booting up into the game's title screen (together with the actual Title Screen track of course). I'd say it rivals main themes from the Super Mario franchise to the point where you could insert it into Super Mario Galaxy without it feeling out of place.
Heating Up Mafia Town is really fitting for a fire level, bringing in middle eastern instrument and the Sitar, which gives me associations to the Lethal Lava Land/Desert from Super Mario 64.
Alpine Skyline really fits the sight mountaineous peaks breaking through the clouds, utizing light horns and flutes to bring in the "airiness" of the surroundings. But it also uses deeper sounding horns akin to alpine ones roaring throughout the mountain peaks. And then at night it turns into a more sinister and serious track Alpine Skyline at Night
The Boss themes are great:
- Barrel Battle
- Mafia Boss' Big Showdown
- The Battle of Award 42
- Toilet of Doom
- Your Contract Has Expired
- You Are All Bad Guys
In stark contrast to these you have the calm and relaxing track Clocktowers Beneath The Sea, where I'd say the title just speaks for itself. Oh, and there is whale song mixed in๐. Peace and Tranquility from the Seal the Deal DLC also gives off the same vibes.
If you're looking for a good mysterious background music track, I recommend Subcon Forest
But the best track, hands down, is Rush Hour from the Nyakuza Metro DLC. The way the track changes tempo and instruments throughout the whole song really makes it unique. It's clearly japanese-inspired in its use of instruments, especially the bridge part at 2:44 reminds me of a Shamisen. Strip away the modern parts of the track leaving only the main motif you can hear at the beginning and you'd have a traditional Japanese Folk song.
